Get ready for the UK’s landlines going digital and stay connected

Connecting with people is vital for our mental health. That’s why we’re working with BT to help make sure everyone knows about the changes to the UK’s landlines, how this may impact them, and what support is available to make the switch.

Are you ready?

The UK’s landlines are going digital as part of an industry-wide switch, affecting all landline providers in the UK, not just BT.

By January 2027, most calls will be made over a broadband line. Don’t worry, your landline is here to stay, and you’ll still be able to make calls the same way as you do today but using different technology.

Digital landlines offer many benefits, including enhanced scam call protection, improved reliability and clearer calls, ensuring a better service for customers.

BT’s service is called Digital Voice, and the switchover is free, your number won’t change, and most handsets are compatible.

For most customers the switch to Digital Voice is as simple as plugging your phone into a router instead of the socket on the wall.

Supporting customers every step of the way

Change can be really unsettling. BT is working closely with the Mental Health Foundation and other charities and representative groups to support the change. Together, we’re providing advice on the needs of those most affected by the switch, and as a result, BT is taking a number of steps to give customers the best possible experience.

If you need additional support or identify as vulnerable, please contact your phone company so they can arrange this for you. BT customers can call 0330 1234 150 for support.

If you use a healthcare alarm, telecare device or medical pendant which allows you to press for help in an emergency, or a burglar alarm, let your phone company know. Also, check with your equipment provider to see whether it needs to be upgraded ahead of the switch.

Ensuring no one is left behind

BT wants to reassure customers with additional needs, they will be able to take advantage of free additional support options. This includes free battery back-up units or hybrid landline phones, that can switch to a mobile network in the event of a power cut and lets you contact emergency services.

What if I don’t have broadband?

Don’t worry if you don’t have broadband, BT will offer a dedicated landline service, allowing customers to use their landline in the same way they do today.

For most people, the switchover will be simple. And BT is ready to help support you through the change.
