The National Three Peaks challenge, involves climbing the three highest peaks of Scotland, England and Wales, often within 24 hours.
A popular misconception is that the three mountains that form the challenge are the three tallest on the British mainland. Rather, they are the tallest mountains within each representative country: Scafell Pike is the tallest in England; Snowdon, the tallest in Wales and Ben Nevis, the tallest in Scotland – over one hundred peaks in Scotland are higher than Scafell Pike, and 56 higher than Snowdon. The total walking distance is 23 miles, and the total ascent is 3064 metres. The total driving distance is 462 miles.
What an unbelievable experience the National Three Peaks Challenge was! My friend and I took on Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike (in the night) and then Snowdon in the absolutely scorching heat. Not only did we ‘take this on’, we absolutely smashed the 24-hour target, completing it in 21.5 hours off very little sleep with blistered feet and a body fuelled on only things such as M&M's and protein bars! [continued] Both Kirstin and I can relate to mental health challenges in different ways. Climbing mountains is something that has helped us massively with our mindset and general attitude towards life. Completing the National Three Peaks Challenge has proved that with the correct mindset anything is achievable – being outside and exercising is so powerful for your brain. I’m extremely proud of us both and we’ll continue to work hard to raise mental health awareness and help others!
The three mountains are:
- Scafell Pike, in England (978m)
- Snowdon, in Wales (1085m)
- Ben Nevis, in Scotland (1345m)
